Image Compression

The advent of multimedia communication is increasing the need for high quality image compression algorithms. Applications for improved image compression algorithms range from their use in teleradiology, to the establishment of a national fingerprint database for the FBI to data storage for multimedia computer applications. AIMS  engineers have developed advanced algorithms and software using wavelet transforms, weak continuity methods, adaptive vector quantization and hierarchical (progressive) image compression. These techniques have led to efficient hierarchical schemes for very large image databases that permit susbstantial memory savings and fast retrieval.
